Being part of the journey: what backing an athlete actually feels like

Anyone can follow an athlete. Following is passive — you consume the highlight and move on. Backing is different. You are in the story, you get the news before the internet does, and when it goes well you have a claim on it that nobody can take off you. This is what that actually feels like, month by month.

Week one: the strange feeling of having a stake

The first thing members notice isn't the rewards — it's the shift in attention. The moment you allocate credits to an athlete, their sport becomes your sport. You start knowing when the regional champs are. You learn what a qualifying standard is in an event you'd never watched. You check a results page on a Sunday morning for a 15-year-old you've never met.

That's not a side effect. That's the product.

The milestone alert

Your athlete submits an achievement — a personal best, a national selection, a club championship, a first podium. It goes through verification: evidence, sources, governing-body records where they exist. It isn't self-declared and it isn't taken on trust.

When it clears, you get the alert. And this is the moment members describe as the hook: you are being told, directly, by the person who did it, before it's a press release or a post. You already earned points the instant you allocated — 10 credits = 1 ralli Reward™, credited on the spot. Now the rewards pool pays out to the circle on top. You watch the number move because of something real that happened on a Saturday morning at a wet athletics track.

The unglamorous months

Here's the honest part. Not every month has a milestone. Sport is mostly off-season, rehab, plateaus, a bad meet, a selection that didn't come. This is exactly the period where traditional funding disappears — sponsors chase results, crowdfunding needs a crisis, and grants need a form.

Membership is the opposite. Your $25 arrives in the flat month. That's the month it matters most, and athletes know it. A backer who was there through a quiet winter is remembered differently to one who appeared after a win.

What you actually see from your athlete

  • Verified milestones as they're approved — with the evidence behind them, not a vague claim.
  • Updates and posts from the athlete's profile — training blocks, competition reports, what the funding was used for.
  • Progress on record — personal bests are kept on file, so a new PB has to genuinely beat the old one to count.
  • Your position in their circle — including founding backer status if you were early.

Why "part of the journey" isn't marketing language

Athletes at the grassroots and emerging level are not funded. They're subsidised by parents, part-time jobs and goodwill, and most of the attrition happens between 15 and 22 — not because of talent, but because the money and the belief run out at the same time. A circle of backers changes two things at once: the balance sheet, and the sense that someone outside the family is watching.

Ask an athlete which one mattered more and a surprising number say the second.

The families' version of the same thing

For parents, aunts, coaches and old teammates, ralli solves an awkward problem: how to help without it feeling like charity or a loan. A membership is a clean, ongoing, dignified way to contribute — the athlete gets funding, you get points and a place in their circle, and nobody has to have the money conversation over dinner.

What you keep at the end

Careers end. Some go all the way, most don't, and a few take a turn nobody predicted. What stays is the record: the athletes you backed, the milestones you were there for, the points you earned and spent, and the fact that you were in the circle at the point in the story where it was hardest.

Following costs nothing and means nothing. Backing costs $25 and means you were there.

What if your athlete goes quiet?

Sport is not tidy. Injuries happen, seasons end, a 16-year-old forgets to upload a result for two months. So the payout system is built so a quiet stretch never costs you.

You already earned points at the moment you allocated — 10 credits = 1 ralli Reward™, credited instantly and yours regardless of what happens next. Meanwhile the 15% rewards share keeps accruing into that athlete's pool; it doesn't expire.

Then the system leans on the athlete rather than on you. Every 90 days without a verified milestone adds +5% to the next release percentage, capped at 60% — so the longer the wait, the bigger the payout when it lands. And if a pool grows beyond roughly six months of accrual, the excess is pushed out in full on the next verified milestone instead of sitting idle. Athletes who stay inactive get nudged, then drop out of discovery entirely, so your credits aren't heading into a dormant profile.

You earn on the way in, you earn on the way through, and waiting only ever increases the release.
